what approach should South Sudan take in developing a history curriculum? And why....
According to me History curriculum of South Should not involve everything that should be taught in history education as the historian specialists say; the will never be enough space to teach everything in history therefore the people who should develop South Sudan history curriculum should be well trained and qualified teachers, scholars, professors who have knowledge about the country's cultures, resources and ethnic groups. when developing the history curriculum it should be put exactly at the levels where the students need to learn for instance the story of origins, freedom, identity and progress so that it becomes part of their lives. The history curriculum should also include peace, civil rights movement as sub-topic so that the upcoming generation know war or attacking each other is not the solution instead goals can be achieved in a peaceful way. Decision making(right decisions) should also be part of curriculum because these will make students analyze issues, formulate informed decisions and effectively communicate their message which will help them broaden their understanding of the world.
You are one of the scholars! I really like the idea of "rights and responsibilities". When students are aware of their rights and responsibilities in the country, they are likely to become good leaders. This will expose them to know personal, political and economical rights such as, freedom of residency, right of speech and rights of running economic activities and the responsibilities of taking good care of oneself, behaving in a civil manner and obeying the law which are the bases of peace and unity in the country.
ReplyDeleteJoy, I think The study of the "decision making" also will help in building an intellectual disciplines and values, to dissect the choices which could be part of our history to shape our believes and choices, to think about the things happened in the past and in the future, to give the students good example of achievements made by our leaders and in international level as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Joy, I agree with you in a point that the historian specialist say, no enough space to include every thing in history curriculum. So we include the most important and positive parts
ReplyDeleteJoy, were you a secretly a social studies teacher? This is a great answer and I really enjoyed the following discussion! Looking not only at what should be taught, but why and how it can be applied beyond the classroom is critical to developing a curriculum. The reasons you list are so important to developing engaged citizens! Well done
